Changelog
Sound It First is in early release and moving fast. Here's everything that has landed so far, newest first.
Daily streak and a daily goal
18 June 2026A gentle nudge to come back each day — built for little children, so it's all encouragement and no pressure.
- A daily streak on the home screen counts the days your child has played in a row, with a warm "nice!" rather than any "don't lose it!" guilt.
- A small daily goal fills up as they play, and celebrates the moment it's reached — a few short goes is all it takes.
- Miss a day? The streak gives you a day's grace before it resets — life happens.
- Tap it to open the weekly recap. As always: no ads, no sign-up, fully offline.
Story time: decodable mini-books
18 June 2026Little read-along books, built from only the sounds your child has met — so they can actually read them, one word at a time.
- Three first books to start — Sam and the Cat, The Big Fish and Jess and the Kite — each stepping up through the phonics path (first words, two-letter sounds, then magic-e).
- "Read to me" walks the page word by word, highlighting and sounding each one, then reads the whole sentence — and your child can tap any word to hear it again.
- Every word is decodable: it uses only the letter-sounds and sight words from the learning path, so reading feels like a win, not a guess.
- Find it on the home screen under Story time. No ads, no sign-up, fully offline.
An animated logo
18 June 2026A small touch: the logo now does the same trick the whole game is built on — a letter that turns into a picture.
- The badge by the "Sound it First" name gently morphs an "s" into a snake and back, a wink to the shape-matched letter art inside the game.
- It's pure motion with no extra download, and it holds still for anyone who prefers reduced motion.
A weekly recap for parents
18 June 2026Open Progress and the first thing you see is your child's week — at a glance, with no sign-up and nothing sent anywhere.
- A seven-day strip shows which days your child practised and how much they earned, with today highlighted and a "days in a row" streak to keep the habit going.
- Headline tiles for the week: stars earned, goes played, and the current streak.
- "Going strong" and "Worth another go" chips show exactly which sounds your child met this week, split into the ones that are sticking and the ones to revisit.
- It's all worked out on your own device from the play that already happens — private by design, and it works fully offline.
Classroom mode for teachers
17 June 2026The same game, set up for the carpet. A teacher can now teach the whole phonics path straight from the board and see, at a glance, which sounds the class needs to revisit.
- A phonics path laid out in teaching order — the eight-course synthetic-phonics spine, each course showing what a child can do after it, with one tap to teach that pack to the whole group in calm, no-pressure practice.
- A class snapshot that pools every student's progress into one view: the sounds the class as a whole is weakest on, so you know exactly what to reteach together.
- A class roster to switch between students and jump to each child's own progress.
- Open it from Settings → For teachers, or from the progress screen. As always: no ads, no sign-up, and it works fully offline.
A full learning path, and a lot more to explore
16 June 2026The biggest update yet. A complete early-reading journey now picks up where the alphabet leaves off, alongside a wave of vocabulary packs and a redesigned, full-screen home.
A step-by-step path to reading
- Listening Ears: tunes a child's ear to the first sound in a word, before any letters are involved.
- Blending: sounds a word out one letter at a time, then says the whole word ("c, a, t, cat!"), so the jump from single letters to real words is gentle.
- Word families: rhyming groups like -at, -ig and -un, where swapping one letter makes a new word.
- Two-letter sounds: the digraphs sh, ch, th and friends, where two letters team up to make one sound.
- Sound blends: clusters like bl, st and tr at the start and end of words.
- Magic-e: how a silent e on the end turns "cap" into "cape" and "kit" into "kite".
- Sight words: the common little words ("the", "was", "you") that are learned by sight rather than sounded out.
- Reading sentences: short, decodable sentences read left to right, with each word highlighted as the child goes.
New vocabulary packs
- Eleven picture packs to grow everyday words: food, family, body, clothes, transport, weather, feelings, home, nature, opposites and action words.
- Every pack works as both a "find it" round and a flashcard-style practice, so the same words can be met more than one way.
A clearer home that fits every screen
- The home screen groups everything into plain sections: Phonics & reading, Words & pictures, and Numbers & maths.
- The whole app now uses the full screen on tablets and computers, and stays tidy and tap-friendly on phones.
- A "View curriculum" button on each pack shows exactly what your child will be taught, so you can check the content at a glance before they start.
Safety and polish
- Real photos for picture packs are in the works, built safety-first: an adult hand-approves every image in a private tool before any child can see it. Not switched on yet.
- Buttons that always fit their words, no more cut-off pictures, and friendlier sounds: the blend packs play a clean recorded sound and then the whole word.
Please note: this is early-release content and some of the learning material may still need improving. We're refining it with feedback, so tell us anything that looks off.
Find it upgrades and a fresh coat of paint
16 June 2026Find it now looks and feels like the rest of the game, the controls are consistent across every mode, and the website got a refresh.
- Find it uses the same shape-matched morph pictures as the rest of the game, with its own morph-or-emoji choice so you can pick the style your child responds to.
- Every mode (Race, Find it and Practice) now shares the same top controls in the same place: sound on or off, game settings, settings and exit.
- The setup screen shows a looping countdown clock, so you can see exactly how long the picture takes to grow at each speed before you start.
- In Morphs mode the letter-case option is hidden, since morph pictures always show capitals, so there is one less confusing choice.
- Word and picture packs lay out as neat tiles or pills that never spill off the screen or cut a word in half.
- A refreshed marketing website, with this changelog and a public roadmap you can follow.
Shape-matched letter art
15 June 2026A memory trick built into the art itself: every letter grows into a picture that shares its shape and its sound, so the letter and what it says stick together.
- All 26 letters now grow into a picture that shares their shape and sound: s into a snake, t into a tree, h into a house.
- The hero animations on the website show the real morphs in motion, so you can see the effect before you play.
- Choose your picture style per game: the new animated morphs, or the classic emoji art.
- Plenty of art polish: grapes, rocket, cat, egg and more were redrawn and cleaned up for clearer shapes.
- Fixed Find it cards that were showing the wrong picture for a letter.
More to learn, and progress to show
14 June 2026The game grew beyond letters, and grown-ups got a way to see how each child is doing.
- New packs beyond letters: Numbers, Shapes, Colours and Animals, plus early maths with adding, taking away and times tables.
- A parent progress dashboard that shows what each child has mastered and what still needs more practice.
- A sticker book that unlocks as lifetime stars add up, to keep children coming back.
- Separate player profiles, each with their own progress and stars, and a colour picker for races.
- A home-screen redesign and a smoother, auto-updating offline app that quietly refreshes itself.
First playable
13 June 2026The first version families could actually play: the core "sound it first" race, plus the foundations the rest of the game is built on.
- The core race: read the letter, call its sound before the picture grows, and score more the earlier you call it.
- Find it mode: hear a sound and tap the matching picture, getting gently harder as a child improves.
- Natural Australian, American and British voices, with male or female options, real letter sounds, and closed captions for the words on screen.
- Spaced repetition quietly brings back the letters a child finds tricky, so practice lands where it is needed.
- One to five player races with named players and a medal podium to finish on.
- Works fully offline with no ads and no sign-up, and the first marketing site went live.
